Great Plains Radio History Symposium
October, 2010
Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS
2010's symposium featured a panel on "radio homemaker programs," a staple of rural Midwestern radio programming from the 1920s through the 1980s. Evelyn was a featured panelist.
Evelyn began her career as a radio homemaker in 1950. She shared conversations, recipes, and friendship with her listeners. She still has a monthly radio visit on KMA radio, Shenandoah IA.
Now more than 90 years young, she lectures at her alma mater, Simpson College, Indianola IA, does on-air fund-raising for Iowa Public Television, and keeps a full calendar of personal appearances.
Evelyn was one of 150 Iowans chosen to represent Iowa at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival on the Mall in Washington, DC in 1996. She was a presenter for the food venue and part of the radio broadcasting center performers working with other Iowa communicators. Evelyn presented several live broadcasts from the Mall during the two week Festival, including a broadcast when she interviewed Iowa native Hugh Sidey.
Evelyn, along with fellow radio broadcaster Lee Kline, of Des Moines, Iowa, hosted "a magical" evening program featuring early radio history at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival on the Mall in Washington DC in 1996.
